The Turbulence Angels have been busy spreading the word on the great sport here is news of a couple of events that happened last year-

The Turbulence Angels 2006http://www.britishkitesurfingassociation.co.uk/images/stories/general/angelsgroupshot.jpg

The mission was born during a dark and dreary winters’ evening in North Wales over a pint by the fire in our local pub.  We were musing about how much fun it is to have a number of girls kiting together at our local beaches and what a shame there were not more girls in the sport.  The boys, surprisingly, agreed!  So it was suggested that we form a girl’s kitesurf team and try to encourage more into the sport.  Another drink and it was decided!  So we approached Adam at Turbulence and he immediately agreed to be our team ‘Charlie’.  The Turbulence Angels were formed!

Since then we stormed through 2006 trying to encourage more girls into kiting.  We organised three girl’s kite events across the UK offering free taster kite lessons to females in the areas and trying to encourage girls who could already kite to come and kite together in the afternoons.  Our first event, which was at our HQ in Llandudno, North Wales had an amazing turnout of over 80 newbies who came for taster lessons and then a very messy ‘Heaven and Hell’ party on the Saturday evening!  Our mission then took us to Troon in Scotland to see how many lassies would be up for the challenge and then to Hunstanton in Norfolk where we continued to spread the word!

We have also helped at some other kite events across the country over the past year including the massive ‘Aussie Kiss IV’ student event in Watergate Bay to promote the sport to the girlies that turned up and the Arctic Foxes Taster weekend in Whitstable, Kent who were raising money for Breast Cancer.  We also worked with the BBC filming a kite ident that is currently running and will be for the next four years, Johara is featured on the ident.

We have a number of exciting things planned for 2007.  We will be running our Angels weekends again this year at some new locations, doing our first Angels trip abroad and will be also working with a new charity.   If you would like to read about our events, trips or just read our diaries please visit our website http://www.turbulenceangels.com  the site is new and we have some interesting articles in the pipeline!

Mission: Get more girls interested in kite sports and raise money for Breast Cancer.

Location: Whitstable, Kent

Date: 02nd- 03rd December ‘06

Mission Info: The Arctic Foxes are running a kiting taster session for girls to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

We were sat in the Bongo sheltering from the howling winds and torrential rain on West Shore when we got chatting about The Arctic Foxes and their record breaking mission to become the first British, all-woman team to cross the Greenland ice sheet.  I had seen a news item on Kite Worlds web site saying they were doing power kiting taster sessions for women and that’s when we decided to contact them and see if we could help.  It was all confirmed and we got onto Flexifoil who sent us a pink buzz and BIG buzz from their fantastic Punk range of kites, these were the perfect kites for this event as £10 is donated to Breast Cancer Awareness for each kite sold from Flexifoils Punk range.

The Saturday started well with the Angels and the Foxes meeting for coffee and bacon butties, it was great to meet these girls, they are a great team.  The girls who were there for lessons were really excited and ready for their first taste in power kiting, many of them having travelled from London and some further.  It was smiles all round with every one loving the Buzz and BIG Buzz, it wasn’t only the girls having the lessons who were enjoying them both the Angels and the Foxes were flying them and loving it today!  There was a great atmosphere with the girls who had come for lessons staying around after dark, so we all had drinks and shared our different kiting tales!

The wind was in full force on the Sunday and the rain was with it, but 20mins before lessons were due to start the sun came out and the black clouds cleared leaving lovely blue skies.  There was another great turn out of girls for the lessons and the blue sky was much appreciated!  The buzz and BIG buzz were so much fun in the stronger winds today but still safe enough for Andy (Traction Kites) to teach with.  The wind carried on building and swung round enough so the Angels could get a little session on the water to show the super keep girls learning another side of kitesports.

Many thanks to the Arctic Foxes for organising a great weekend and Andy from Traction kites for being really patient teaching so many girls!
