BKSA Round 5 Scotland

Father and daughter team Pete & Hannah Whiteley had good reason to celebrate at Round 5 of the British Kite Surfing Association Championships. With an amazing Deadman to Kiteloop followed by
a spectacular landing that had the crowd shouting for more, Pete won the Seniors Men’s category.
In true family style, Hannah followed with some fantastic moves including; Backloops, Rallies, Transitions and Kiteloops to take 1st place in the Ladies Amateurs.
And if that wasn’t enough to keep the Whiteley family happy, Hannah’s younger brother Joseph got
in on the act when he appeared on television during the STV’s coverage of the event! The sun shone & the wind arrived on Friday at Balmedie beach to provide a perfect start to the weekend. After a much-needed bacon butty for breakfast, courtesy of our hosts, riders took to the water and the pro comps began. Scottish rider Helen Thompson of Tiree sponsored by North, Xcel & Sombrio was 400 points behind leader Johara Sykes Davis at the start of the pro women’s heat. Sporting her new board featuring
the ‘Thompson Tartan’, Helen pulled F16’s, S Bends, Rallies to toe, Kiteloops & Backloops to finish
in 1st place closing the gap by 140 points.
Helen needs to win both the remaining 2 rounds if she is to beat Johara and take the Pro Women’s title. Helen headed straight back to Tiree after the competition to make use of the windy conditions and to get in some extra training ahead of Round 6 at Littlehampton on 14-16th September. Sam Light, sponsored by Naish & O’Neill, took his 1st win in the Pro Men’s competition to place him 2nd overall and 310 points behind current British Champion, Lewis Crathern.
Sam produced some awesome riding with S Bends to Blind, S Bends to Blind Switch & Big Kiteloop Handle Passes.
Robin Snuggs also rode brilliantly; Sent 360 Handle Passes, Sent 720 Handle Passes, Sent Handle
Pass 720 Out saw him take 2nd place, giving him 3rd place overall with 3696 points.
Despite Nose Grabs to Blind off Kicker, Rallie Boschmosis & Grabbed Slim Chance, Lewis had to
settle for 3rd place but still leads overall with 4146 points. Ali Barratt rode fearlessly with a Hooked
in Kiteloop to Flat 3 that amazed even the most experienced pro riders to finish in 4th place. Saturday proved disappointing for wind but the BKSA had contingency plans. Armed with their new toys, Jet Ski. Ringos, zap cat and quad bike, all kindly provided by BKSA Treasurer Colin Marshall of Victoria Builders, the BKSA were able to keep riders and the general public entertained with ‘ringo battles’. After a day spent resting on the beach, riders were ready for the legendary party night and were not disappointed! Race crew & riders woke to onshore winds on Sunday and it was all systems go to make full use of
the conditions and complete the competitions in all categories. First up were the Junior heats and instantly standards were good. Toby Raw impressed with Slim Chances and Tom Butler produced some cracking Backloop Kiteloops. However, Dan James, sponsored by North, H2O Sports &
Deadman Clothing, stole the show with spectators commenting that he had more tricks up his
sleeve than the best magician! Dangle Passes; Double Backloops & F16’s ensured Dan 1st place
and an comfortable overall lead with 4166 points 550 points ahead of 2nd place Tom Butler and
680 points ahead of Toby Raw in 3rd place.
A surprise result in the Amateur Men’s category saw newcomer Luke Whiteside, sponsored by
Kite It Right take 1st place after riding in his 1st BKSA competition. S Bends, Kung Foo’s & Dangle Passes gave him the edge and ensured he is one to watch in future competitions.
Ned Taylor, sponsored by Edge Watersports took 2nd place with some nice hooked Kiteloops
Dan Gallemore came 3rd but enters Round 6 in 1st place with 4166 points.
Richard Gowers, Chairman of the BKSA said, “We are extremely grateful for all the hard work that
has been done by event coordinator, Glen Foley, without whom this wouldn’t have happened.
Glen has worked tirelessly for the entire weekend alongside the BKSA race crew, beach marshals
and judges to ensure that the event was a success.
The points are still very close and as yet there is no outright winner in any of the categories. The remaining rounds at Littlehampton 14-16th September and Hayling 5-7th October will be very
exciting and well worth watching.
