Poole Kitesurf Club was set up in March of this year as a means of joining together local kiters and we quickly grew to 200 members.
Shortly afterwards we were approached by Poole Harbour Commisioners via the Harbour Master who was concerned with safety especially in Poole Harbour and it was made clear that unless safety and regulation were considered a ban of could be in place in Poole harbour. The club was asked to be the main point of contact for the Harbour Master in an independent and equitable manner to ensure that kiting remained viable long term locally for the masses as well as the local shops and schools who's very existence relies on Poole Harbour being accessible.
We have for years been blessed as having Poole harbour on our doorstep, the 2nd biggest natural harbour in the world, with its shallow waters and stunning scenery. However with the explosion of the popularity of kiting over the years and the proximity of the main road and hazards of the sea wall and often over 100 kiters on the water the harbour has become possibly hazardous for all users and the pubic. The club is committed to working with the PCH, council and local stakeholders and local kiters to keep the facility of the harbour safe and sustainable.
To ensure the messages of safety reach a large population I am inviting you to join Poole Kitesurf Cub so your voice can be heard,
In addition to the more formal side of regulation and safety the club has a fantastic social scene and we meet for a beer and a natter most Thursdays. I have been keen throughout to keep the club FREE to encourage as many members as possible to join and be a part of something that could be very exiting. The networking via the social medium of Facebook has been very successful allowing people to meet to kite ensuring you always have a kite buddy to share your fun, often there are 20-30 club members on beaches across the south coast you can join.
The club also organises an annual Fundraising summer party, last year we raised £4,500 for MacMillian Cancer Care and this year we aim for raise in excess of £10,000 for charity.
Over the winter when kiting is not possible there are frequent trips to other events such as snowboarding and paint balling. The club despite its name welcomes kiters of all disciplines, water land and snow.
How do you join ? All we require are your BKSA membership details and expiry dates and and enter your details here .. http://www.poolekitesurfclub.co.uk/p/join-club.html
When you renew your insurance via the BKSA please ensure you join via the club on the drop down menu here and we then receive £5 into the funds of the club to put towards safety and recognition. British Kitesurfing Association - BKSA
We are planning to host some training events in the new year which we we open to all members for free and all such events will be advertised via e-mail to members as well as on our Facebook like page https://www.facebook.com/Poolkitesurfclub
and on our very busy and interactive group on facebook.
and there are now new forums on the clubs website for those who do not use Facebook.
http://poolekitesurfclub.freeforums.org
The club is still very much in its infancy and as we develop with more members and income from joining and renewing members we will be developing club rashes, tags for harnesses mail shots and newsletters.
Come and join us, have a voice and be part of something that is proving to be successful and very exiting !
Kind regards
Gary

Survey - Queens University |
|
|
|
|

A team at Queen’s University Management School in Belfast want your help!
They are conducting a study that looks at the kind of outdoor activities people do or do not take part in. They are asking members of associations like ours to take part in this study to explore what people do, why they participate and general behaviours. This research study is funded by the British Academy, and all participant information is kept confidential. You only need to leave an email address if you want to be considered for one of the 30 prizes available.
Understanding the kind of outdoor activities people take part in and how this relates to lifestyle choices is an important part of promoting such activities and the associated positive impacts.
The survey takes approximately 10 minutes and when you participate you could win one of 30 prizes. Prizes on offer include membership of the National Trust, a compass, a wind-up torch or the adoption of a tiger!
They hope to get a good representation from people who enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. If you would like to take part please click on the link and follow the instructions on screen.

The ISAF Team Try Kitesurfing At West Wittering Club |
|
|
|
|

The ISAF Team
We were really pleased to host The British Kitesurf Association with the team from ISAF for kitesurfing lessons.
ISAF, based in Southampton, are the International Sailing Federation (the FIFA of sailing world) who have taken on Kitesurfing as the extreme end of sailing and looking worldwide to organise world class events and possibly add kitesurfing as a class in the Olmypics. This is a big deal for kitesurfing as a sport and we were very pleased they chose X-train and West Wittering as a location.
Kitesurfing originally became a class of ISAF in order to claim the sailing world speed record in 2008. This record was then increased again by Rob Douglas in 2010 (56.65 knots)
Since Kitesurfing took the outright world speed sailing record in 2008, kitesurfing became a class of ISAF to claim the record. This record was increased again by Rob Douglas

We had a cracking team on hand for the coaching, including Kirsten Borse (4 times world kitesurfing champion), Ellie and Myles from Easy Riders in Poole and James Crowe from X-Train West Wittering
Richard Gowers, the chairman of the BKSA was also on hand to help. He commented “It’s great to see the ISAF team trying kitesurfing – we want them to understand the kitesurf experience and enjoy it!”
Tamsin, Q, Al, Dan and Clive were put through their paces with an initial power-kite session in the field at West Wittering beach and then straight out into the shallow, tidal lagoon for some body dragging sessions. The wind was light – about 10 to 15 knots and there was plenty of flat water. The conditions gave every chance of progress to board skills, edging and getting up for the first time to get the real kitesurfing experience.
The second day was not so windy. Everyone had a SUP session in the morning, followed by a second kitesurfing session in the afternoon.

Thanks to X-Train and West Wittering Windsurf Club for hosting the event.

GO-Joe: leashless board retrieval, discounts for schools. |
|
|
|
|
Traditional surfboard leashes have proven to be dangerous on water and land and any type of leash can cause impediments.
The GO-Joe is a ‘leash free’ tool to assist in the retrieval of your kiteboard without fear of being impacted by a leashed board after a spill. The GO-Joe is perfect for beginners and intermediates learning board recovery techniques, and for schools who want to minimise the time their students spend retrieving their boards. Advanced riders taking on crossings and open water sailing in rough conditions will appreciate the faster board recovery too.
The GO-Joe simply bolts into the grab handle inserts on your board, your grab handle will still fit, and is inflated with your kite pump. The special ‘hourglass’ shape flips your board over even when it lands foot-straps down, and reduces drag from spray from the board rails. When you lose your board, the GO-Joe acts as a sail and blows the board downwind to you, you just need to park your kite at 12 o’clock and wait for it to arrive.
The GO-Joe retails at £59, ready to fit to your board and comes in a range of colours to stand out against your riding environment.
Schools and centres should get in touch with Ocean Rodeo to receive special discounts on the GO-Joe and other schools equipment.

Make the Most of Your Coast – British Beach Week Launches Seaside trips, the most popular domestic visit British Beach Week (23rd – 31st July)launches to celebrate the UK coastline cottages4you reveals most popular UK beaches for 2011
When it comes to UK holidays, it seems nothing beats a visit to the British seaside, but according to holidaymakers, only a third of us would consider extending a visit into an overnight stay.
The poll, carried out by the UK’s leading holiday cottage letting agency cottages4you, found that although the nation prefers a coastal visit over a countryside or city break, most people (47 per cent) only consider a day trip. The survey was commissioned ahead of the cottages4you British Beach Week, which runs from 23rd to 31st July. The week aims to encourage people of all ages to fully explore the nation’s beaches and highlight the boundless opportunities the UK’s coast has to offer.
Whether it is kite surfing for the adrenalin junkie or beachcombing and rock-pooling for families, there is something for everyone to enjoy, in all weathers! The majority of coastal lovers identified their main reason for visiting a British beach as a chance to spend time with the family (40 per cent), with small resorts being the most popular. Only five per cent said their visit was for a specific beach activity, such as surfing, despite the abundance of facilities available across the country. Nick Rudge from cottages4you said: “With miles of coastline to explore, many of which are within only a few hours’ drive, the British seaside is the perfect holiday destination with plenty to see and do. “We’re launching British Beach Week to highlight the variety on offer. Whether you want an adrenalin-packed holiday with water sports, fun-filled resorts with amusements or simply a stunning backdrop to your family break, we have cottages throughout the UK where you can base yourself and enjoy all the UK coastline has to offer.” For those needing inspiration on where to go for a week’s stay or short break on their next staycation, cottages4you has also revealed the UK’s top beach destinations, based on booking figures for Summer 2011.
What’s more, to make the most of your summer, cottages4you is offering up to 20 per cent off many holidays during the school holidays. To find out more, visit www.cottages4you.co.uk

‘Pirates of the English Channel’’ |
|
|
|
|
June 2011-Maxsurf.co.uk is hired for professional extreme sport photography ‘sea yourself in action’. by a local bunch of surf heads, to cross the English Channel at Guinness Book record speed, whilst raising bucks for the children’s charity Demelsa.
V-Dub Victoria & danger john from Maxsurf supported 2 ribs professionally skippered by Henk & Will from Rye ‘kites on board’’. During which time the English Channel had received strong south westerly winds for 3 days consistently!
Huge swell on the departure day Sunday 19th, of June. Touching force 7, 25ft swells when crossing the separation zone (13 miles out) 2 kitesurfers failed due to swell base & nerves. One rib went throw a wave flooding it & close to capsizing! Ending in stressed crew & a broken console. After contemplating calling it off a few times! we endeavoured to continue for the money raised for Demelsa charity, to which 2 kitesurfers arrived off Boulogne (Wayne & Tom made it) both boys where massively stocked and extremely exhausted! Recovery of the kites to the ribs was interesting to say the least (antics galore) only due to excellent helmsman ship skills by the ribs skipper. Battled huge house size waves to keep afloat and safe.
Camera footage was great upon departure but very limited during transit oddly enough...
Wayne AKA ‘Worsil’ & Tom AKA ‘tiny tops’ crossed in 2hrs 30mins, but sadly not recorded due to camera failure and the radical storm we rode through.
The boys ended up in a French bar & the ribs stayed in port until the next day, as no way was any one going aboard in that type of sea again. After spending 40 years at sea since childhood this was without doubt one of the most radical trips ever. Thanks boys!
Live coverage below (wait near end & see huge swell base to the right..)

A group of 8 students from Cardiff University Kitesurfing Club are putting their kitesurfing skills and endurance levels to the test by kitesurfing across the Bristol Channel!
The event will be held between the 1st - 14th April, with the exact date to be confirmed when wind reports are released nearer the time. We will keep everyone posted on this so watch this space.
The 9-mile trip, starting at Penarth, Cardiff, and finishing at Weston-Super-Mare, will see the group facing waves, ships, strong winds (hopefully nice 12m wind) and debris while hopefully having the time to take in the view of Steep Holm and Flat Holm, 2 islands along the route. The 8 intrepid kitesurfers will be supported by the university’s own Sub-Aqua and Sailing clubs who have kindly donated ribs and drivers for the support boats. The event is also supported by Cardiff University and its Union as well as the local RNLI boatmen.
Money raised from the event will be split between two charities: The MS Society and RNLI.
The MS Society is a charity particularly close to the heart of CUKC since one of its members suffers from the disease and he is one of the reasons that this event was thought up and why the club is so passionate to complete the event and raise as much money as possible.
The MS Society is the UK's largest charity dedicated to supporting everyone whose life is touched by MS. It provides respite care, a freephone MS Helpline, grants for home adaptations and mobility aids, education and training, MS specialist nurses and a wide range of information. Local branches cater for people of all ages and interests and are run by people with direct experience of MS. The MS Society also funds over 50 vital MS research projects in the UK.
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales. The RNLI also works to promote sea and beach safety.

After 110 mile and 9 hours on the water all the riders completed the massive Kitesurf trip from Ireland back to England.
Hampered for over a year by the weather finally the team got the break they needed and completed the trip.
A great welcome from family, friends and local people saw them arrive together, in style, to Silloth West Beach.
Fraser Dooley, Martin Sandwith, Stuart Wood, Nick Elliott and John Flynn all arrived in good form and even had enough stamina left for a champagne celebration on the beach.
Many thanks to all the supporters and sponsors who have made this trip work.
Please check out the website www.kitesurfirishsea.co.uk over the next few days for accounts of the trip and photos.
