UK SPORTS TO RECEIVE MORE FUNDING
Many UK sports are suffering the effects of the credit crunch, with a recent survey revealing that up to 6,000 community sports clubs could close during the recession due to failing revenues. But help is now on its way from a brand new TV Game, launching this autumn, which will bring much needed funding to sports clubs across the UK.
BingoLotto is a live TV game that will air weekly on Virgin 1 from 13th September 2009. Participants will be able to buy a Gamecard for £2 from any Tesco till point in Britain allowing them to play alongside the TV game that offers multiple chances to play and win throughout the hour long TV game. For every Gamecard sold, a fantastic 20% will be donated to UK good causes. More than 130 governing bodies of sport and recreation will receive funding through BingoLotto and, with many grassroots sports clubs already feeling the pinch, this new initiative is likely to be a saviour for many clubs.
A pilot series of BingoLotto in 2008 raised over £100,000 which has already been distributed to governing bodies through CCPR, the alliance of sport and recreation bodies, allowing clubs to support their members despite the economic crisis. Dave Luscombe from the Auto Cycle Union explains the difference BingoLotto has already made and will continue to make: “As a sport we are overlooked by all sporting funding bodies and don’t receive funding from anyone, The Auto Cycle Union only receives funding from BingoLotto and this support has the potential to make a massive difference to the sport and help and increase participation across all motor cycle sports.” Charles Bartholomew from UK Athletics adds: “Funding from BingoLotto provides an additional funding stream that can support projects (or aspects of them) that might otherwise get overlooked by the World Class Performance Programme.” BingoLotto are planning a huge nationwide advertising campaign to promote the launch, and with Tesco’s involvement, anticipate that sales will exceed and eclipse those of Series 1 in 2008. With Gamecards available to buy from every Tesco store across the UK from Monday 7 September , this means more opportunities to buy, play and win and of course, more potential funds available for clubs. In addition to this national advertising and promotion, sporting organisations that have signed up to be one of the beneficiaries of the scheme, will be encouraged to promote BingoLotto as much as possible within their own networks and in their clubs. Word of mouth is a powerful tool - and the more Gamecards that are sold, the more funds will become available to be shared between the participating organisations. To raise awareness, BingoLotto will be sending out emails to the beneficiary organisations prior to the launch and promotional posters will also be available at www.bingolotto.tv for members to download and display in clubs and offices. There is massive potential for BingoLotto to raise millions of pounds for UK sports. The programme originates in Sweden and since it started 15 years ago 1.5 billion Gamecards have been sold, providing just under £1 billion to sports clubs and charities in Sweden. |

Girlie camps in Fuerteventura A week full of fantastic surf, brilliant surf instructors, wonderful Girlies, sun, crazy party tricks and Swedish snaps songs. It couldn´t be better! Living in such a nice place with a view out over the ocean made it easy to like it from the first second. Everyday we got picked up by Alex and Greg our instructors from Flagbeach Surf Center and went off to different beaches. Playa Blanca, Cotillio, Playa Norte, Flagbeach. We paddled, got slammed, surfed and had so much fun! We had competitions going on on the beach, where the girls competed in “Best style on the water”, “Best slam”, “Bravest girl in the water”. Not very surprised, the girls were stoked for the prizes from our partner Roxy and they where defiantly worth it for their contribution in the water. “ Best slam” went to Isabel Venneman that chocked us all when she paddled out in the big waves and went for the BIG waves. She got slammed, but hell yeah she tried! “Bravest Girlie in the water” with the winner Barbara Dabrowska. Not everyone can go for the big waves! Barbara did a lot of progress in the water, on the water, under the water and decided to stick with snowboarding in the future. “Best style on the water” went to Tintin Decker. She was catching the waves with a lot of style and smile on her face. Girlie likes that! The rest of the Girlies should have a prize as well cause they are amazing. After surf we hung out in the small village of Corralejo. Had a coffee down by the beach walk, went eating together, drank a beer or two and did some serious shopping. Thanks to “Kings” shop we all got a discount and could go wild in the shop. One of those shops you just can´t leave without having a bag with you. Down by the harbor we found a place called Café Lounge. The crew there just made our mondays! We struggled to find the way to their Aussie BBQ but once we were there you get everything you can dream of to eat, and special made pink Girlie shots for the girls. Great! We spent some nights in a bar called Board riders and had some crazy party nights at a karaoke bar called Flicks. Fuerteventura gives you sun every day! Beaches with white sand, clear turquoise water and perfect waves. Volcanos, desert, empty beaches. It´s an amazing environment and place for surf, kite surf and wind surf, and when you see all these colorful kites in the air it just makes you wanna try out all the water sports there is! Thanks to our partner Flagbeach Surf Center, Ben with crew for this amazing week! Many of us found friendships for life and a reason to visit Corralejo, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, Swiss and Sweden. Girlie Camps will come back to Fuerteventura again in September. Hope to see you there! Maria Nillius |

The Turbulence Angels have been revitalized with the addition of two new Angels hailing from the Turbulence stomping ground of North Wales; kitesurfer Meg Giffiths and freestyle buggier Marie Thorpe. The Turbulence Angels invited the pair of inspirational girls to join them when they saw their dedication to kiting and how excited they were to help in spreading the word to other girls about what a fab sport kiting is!
Meg has been kiting for a year and a half and has just spent the last winter in SA. She came back to win the first round of the BKSA Ladies Ams in Swansea, which confirmed her place as an Angel!
Marie is one of a new breed of female freestyle kite buggiers. She has joined the Angels to show that kiting on the land is for girls too! Turbulence is so proud to have them both on board to help the original Angels push the limits of girl’s buggy riding and kitesurfing.
The team of girls have a lot planned for the coming year, both individually and as a team… BKSA, PKRA, land events, snowkite events, girl’s taster sessions, videoing, traveling etc etc!! As the first event for 2009, the Turbulence Angels have teamed up with Thundercat Racing for their event in Penmaenmawr, North Wales, on the 20/21 June. They will be doing demo’s on and off the water to wow the crowds of Penmaenmawr and then will be offering free taster lessons to anyone who wishes to step up to the challenge in the afternoons.

World record holder to come to Battle for the Bay
May 30-31, 2009, Dublin
This June bank holiday sees the 3rd annual Battle for the Bay windfestival get under way, featuring the very best of Irish and international kitesurfers and windsurfers on Dollymount Strand in Dublin.
The festival will feature freestyle competitions and course racing and is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Dublin to see what kitesurfers get up to on their beach when the wind blows. This year’s festival will feature the presence of Alex Caizergues the fastest man across the water and triple world champion and Irish windsurfing speed champion John Kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing if not the fastest growing watersport in the world and Dollymount is home to the biggest community of kitesurfers in Ireland. Last year’s festival was a huge success and provided some great entertainment to visitors to Dollymount Strand between freestyle demonstrations and the comparatively new sport of kitesurf racing. This year’s festival promises to be even bigger featuring action to suit everyone from young to old. The competitive schedule includes the Irish Kitesurfing Championship freestyle competitions which should see national champion Eamon Armstrong battle for the right to retain his title against young guns Sean Murphy and Ross Harte. This year will see the 2008 ladies’ champion, Dominika Kupciw fight to defend her title against Aleks Bondareva, the 2007 ladies champion after last year’s closely fought battles between the pair. There are also a number of speed races planned and if last year is anything to go by, these should provide much entertainment both on and off the water.
A star attraction this year will be a speed battle between Ireland’s speed windsurfing hero John Kenny and world champion kitespeeder, Alex Caizergues.
There will be plenty to entertain on the beach between stunt kite demonstrations, powerkite demonstrations, introductory lessons with qualified instructors and other beach games such as beach volleyball. This year there will also be stand up paddle demonstrations. For visitors it is a fantastic opportunity to get to know more about kitesports and the people involved in Not only that, the sun has always shone on the Battle for the Bay.
Further information is available from Francois Colussi at Pure Magic Kitesurfing.

South Coast kitesurfing enthusiasts, Ashley Overton and Rob Ward announced in January that they will be attempting to kitesurf across the British Channel in record time to raise money for Hampshire based charity, Champion Behaviours. The plans have progressed in the meantime and the challenge is due to take place in May 2009 with the hope of raising in excess of £10,000 for Champion Behaviours. In order to set a new record, Ashley and Rob will be setting sail from Poole, and will aim to endure the tough 75-mile crossing across the busiest shipping lane in the world to reach the French shores of Cherbourg some 8 hours later. An achievement, without physical contact or outside assistance from their accompanying mothership will give them the Guinness Record for Cross-Channel Kitesurfing, this being the first approved and authorised crossing Champion Behaviours is a non-profit organisation set up to deliver motivational workshops and programmes to young people aged between 12-15 years old, who are in danger of exclusion from school and society. The organisation works tirelessly with local communities to ensure young people feel a sense of belonging, rather than creating their own groups and rules that can cause problems in society. Ashley, who is also New Boat Sales Director at Ancasta International Boat Sales, has always had a passion for the sea. Already a keen sailor, he took up kitesurfing five years ago with the ultimate goal of speed racing across the channel in mind. 37 year old Rob is already a dedicated adventure and has completed previous windsurfing, cycling and walking challenges for various charities. Rob has been kiting for four years. Ashley says, “This entire project is about pushing the boundaries, setting targets which are out of comfortable reach - the distance, the records, the fitness levels required and financial targets for the charity. Anything less wouldn’t hurt, and therefore not enough of a challenge. This will be a great challenge for keeping me focused for 2009. When I look out from the beach at Poole, I still have to remind myself that the furthest spot on the horizon is probably only one-third of the total distance, which is very different to the 100 metre runs that most kiteboarders are used to. All being well, this should be the kick-start for a Round-Britain challenge in 2010!” Rob agrees, “The Cross channel challenge absolutely hits the spot for me! It combines both my passions for kitesurfing and adventure in a perfect way. This is a challenge that I am totally committed to and I will do whatever I can to ensure it’s a success.” Paul Stevens, Founder of Champion Behaviours says, “I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about Ashley and Rob’s commitment to raising money for Champion Behaviours. The difference it will make to us could be huge and I look forward to being involved with their continued efforts”. All contributions most welcome via http://www.justgiving.com/ashleyovertonrobward |

1st Ever Charity Kite Surf Challenge from Alderney to Poole In September Andy Ward from Poole in Dorset will attempt to enter the record books as he kite surfs across the English Channel, 70 nautical miles across the busy shipping lane from Alderney in the Channel Islands to Poole in Dorset. Father of three, Andy, has been kite surfing for three years, and is hoping to raise funds for the Special Boat Service Association which supports member and former members of the SBS and their families. Andy has family connection who works for the charity. During the attempt Andy will be supported by full manned support boats on the water and a land-based team who will be monitoring his process at all stages. Dave Hartwell, Manager of The Water Sports Academy, will be one of those on hand at sea, should Andy need help. As a minimum the team will consist of a Coxswain who will pilot the rib and ultimately manage the event, a First Aider, a Camera Man and two experienced kite handlers in case of damage to the kit.
Andy is just waiting to hear back if the Royal Marines will be available as support craft and if so they would provide the team with x 2 RIBS and Coxswains. Contingency plans are being made if the Royal Marines are suddenly not available. With a need for force five winds to complete the crossing, Andy only has a maximum window of two sets of four days this September to coincide sufficient winds, maximum daylight and the favourable tides required to complete the crossing successfully. Andy is hoping to complete the crossing in up to eight hours. The team will monitor the weather towards the end of August and will be looking at the first 4 day period from September 7th or from the 22nd when the tides are best to cross and hope to identify a good force 5 westerly to allow Andy to cross in as much of a straight line as natures waters allow. The more variation on a westerly wind direction, the more tacking back and forth Andy will have to do, therefore increasing the overall distance. The first of endurance runs have already started and Andy states ‘Rome was not built in a day’ and has started with some small coastal runs which were completed on April 24th and April 25th from Hengistbury Head to Sandbanks and back and forth totalling over 42 Nautical miles (video blogs of these can be found on the gallery page on kitethechannel.co.uk) Future endurance runs further out to sea will take place in May and in June a coastal run from Lyme Bay to Portland will take place. To sponsor Andy or learn more about the challenge please visit his site www.kitethechannel.co.uk and click on the JustGiving.com banner if you wish to sponsor him and his team |

VanSurf 2009
This event started last year a proved to be very popular and is now back this year for all to enjoy. The brainchild of kiteboarder come VW camper enthusiast, he quickly realized that a large percentage of VW camper owners lifestyle revolved around water sports. After coming back from several VW camper shows wondering why there wasn’t a show that combine peoples love of water sports and campers the idea of VanSurf was born.
Interest people don’t require to have a VW camper to attend this event but you probably will want one after you leave. The main the theme of VanSurf is based around kiteboarding with demo kit available for all to try and advise for newbees. A large section of beach is reserved also for land boards ,buggies and general kite flying. Though kites are the main theme surf is also in the mix of fun to be had, hire boards available and a VW cruise is planned on the Sunday from Black Rock Sands to Hells Mouth.
Set on one of Britons best kiteboarding locations for beginners to advanced riders, Blackrock Sands Beach has the bonus of allowing the Vans to be parked directly on the beach, with hard compact sands for buggies and lagoons for flat-water heaven up to a mile long this truly is a great location.
The campsite holding the VanSurf is located at the end of the beach and has a designated area for VanSurfers with a central Event tent for social drinking and anyone to show of the evening entertainment skills. During the night entertainment a raffle is held with goodies from sponsors to help raise money for the RLNI an obvious charity for kitesurfing.
