Mark Warner Abu Soma, Egypt
The Abu Soma Kitesurfing Centre in Egypt
The Centre:
Just 40 minutes from Hurghada, The Abu Soma Mark Warner Centre lies on the shores of the Red Sea in Egypt, where blue waters lap pristine white sands. The centre is open all year round, from 9 until 5.30 in the summer and until 4.30 in the winter months. The shallow and super-flat lagoon, plus deep water chop means there is something for everyone here, whether you’re starting out, trying to nail some tricks or just want to blast around. There are plenty more activities on offer here, like windsurfing, sailing, beach kayaking, water skiing, wakeboarding and diving. The kite-zone and windsurf zone are kept well apart for safety and the vast open space allows this.
If you are staying at the centre, you’ll love the five-star Intercontinental Hotel in its attractive garden setting with luxury rooms overlooking the beach. Childcare and babysitting is available for families and many more activities ranging from tennis to snorkelling, or sight-seeing to Luxor and other places. There are no less than four restaurants and five bars to replenish after a hard day on the water, plus three swimming pools for a relaxing dip.
The Wind:
The wind here blows cross-on and is strong, with a force 5 or 6 early the morning, picking up to a steady force 7 at around 11am. This starts to reduce again around 1pm and then drops off completely at 3pm. That leaves just enough time to relax by the pool until it becomes glass flat at the end of day and you can go water-skiing or wakeboarding. The best wind is in the summer months (May to October) and in the winter the wind is usually slightly less strong requiring bigger kites.
The Sea:
At high tide a super-flat and shallow lagoon forms, which at 3 miles long and a quarter mile across is the ideal place for complete beginners to build up confidence or intermediates to try new tricks. The deeper water next to it provides short chop ideal for pops and burning around. There is predominantly sand, with some coral, but nothing serious.
Water/Air temp:
The water in the Red Sea is fantastically warm nearly all year round, dipping during the months of December to February, when a wetsuit or shorty are recommended for those planning on riding all day. The air temperature is up in the mid 30’s most of the year, but again the winter brings with it periods of comfortable mid 20’s (degrees Celsius). So boardies weather most of the time and it is advisable to wear a rash vest due to the strength of the sun and the wind. See more information on average temperatures in Egypt.
Water Depth:
Very shallow in the lagoon with deep water next to it. Suitability for different levels: Beginners will love the lagoon that forms at high tide, which offers up super easy conditions with flat, shallow water and lots of space. Mornings are usually the best times to learn. Intermediates and Advanced will also use the lagoon for tricks and enjoy the chop and high winds in the afternoon. This really is a centre suited to all levels.
Kite Equipment:
Abu Soma is very well equipped with predominantly Best kites and some North, plus foil kites for land-based lessons. With 120 inflatable kites and 25 boards in all sizes, there is something for everyone and enough stock to make sure everyone has exactly what they need!
